Summary: On September 19, 2024, the Investigative Committee opened a criminal case under the article on the implementation of the activities of an undesirable organization (Article 284.1 of the Criminal Code) against the editor-in-chief of the Novaya Gazeta Evropa publication Kirill Martynov, TASS and RIA Novosti reported.
October 4, 2024 The First Department clarified that the case was opened under the article on organizing the activities of an undesirable organization (Part 3 of Article 284.1 of the Criminal Code). Martynov was accused of “carrying out the functions of the editor-in-chief” of Novaya Gazeta Evropa and “carrying out the functions of the head” of the Free University (the organization’s card is in the Chronicles of Persecution). The maximum punishment that Martynov faces is nine years in prison. Martynov is not in Russia.
November 6, 2024 The Basmanny District Court of Moscow arrested Kirill Martynov, editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta Evropa, in absentia in a case of organizing the activities of an “undesirable” organization (Article 284.1 of the Criminal Code). The court ruling states that Martynov was sentenced to two months of arrest, which will begin to run from the moment of his extradition or detention in Russia. He was put on the international wanted list, Novaya Gazeta Evropa reports.
