Incident Date: August 26, 2025
Incident Type: Detention
Institution: Pitirim Sorokin Syktyvkar State University (SSU)
Summary: According to Novaya Gazeta, philosopher and sociologist Nikolai Zyuzev was detained in Syktyvkar. A message about this was published on the website of the Syktyvkar City Court. On August 26, Judge Aleksey Rodionov of the Syktyvkar City Court extended Nikolay Zyuzev’s detention. According to Komi Daily, Russian courts make such decisions before the first two months of a detainee’s stay in a pretrial detention facility have expired. The scientist was likely detained as early as late June 2025, although neither regional media nor private sources reported this.
Details: Novaya Gazeta writes that Zyuzyev has held Canadian citizenship since 2008, where he lives and teaches. From 2016 to 2022, Zyuzev taught sociology at Pitirim Sorokin Syktyvkar State University. However, after the start of the SVO, he left Russia again, returning to his home village in the region. Zyuzev is suspected of confidential collaboration with a foreign state (Article 275.1 of the Criminal Code). Komi Daily believes that the detention of Nikolai Zyuzev is connected with the persecution of the Syktyvkar “Revolt Center“.
Nikolay Zyuzev is a Doctor of Philosophy and a researcher on Pitirim Sorokin.
