Summary: On August 9, 2025, the Vasileostrovsky District Court of St. Petersburg fined Vladimir Gelman 30,000 rubles for “discrediting the army.”
Details: The charge sheet was filed following seven posts on Gelman’s personal Telegram channel about the war against Ukraine. These posts were brought to the attention of the FSB Directorate for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region. The posts have now been deleted, reports Groza
Vladimir Gelman is a political scientist, PhD in political science, and professor at the European University at St. Petersburg (1996-2023). Since 2012, he has been a professor at the University of Helsinki. Political scientist Alexander Kynev wrote on Facebook: “There are two political scientists in Russia who are highly cited in English outside of Russia (that is, they are known and recognized by global political science), and who actively write and publish in English. This is Gelman and Golosov.”
