RASA Statement In Support of Professor Ivan Kurilla

The Russian American Science Association (RASA) expresses its strong support for its member, the renowned scholar in the field of American studies, Ivan Kurilla, in response to the decision of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation to include him in the registry of “foreign agents.” We consider this decision politically motivated and discriminatory.

Ivan Kurilla is a leading specialist in the history of the United States, including Russian-American relations, and a recognized expert in the fields of historical memory and historical policy. His scholarly work has rightfully received wide international recognition.

We call on the international academic community, including universities and research organizations in the United States, European Union countries, and other democratic nations, to provide full support to Russian-speaking scholars who remain committed to the principles of professional and independent research and who face persecution for their professional integrity and intellectual independence.

Summing up the results of the year as editor-in-chief, I reflect on the path I have traveled in this field over the past five years. At the end of 2019, I accepted the invitation from Pleiades Publishing to lead the journal, which at that time was called Review Journal of Chemistry. I agreed because I firmly believed in the importance of continuing publishing activities and preserving national scientific journals in the countries of the former USSR—especially in Russia, where the main scientific potential of the former superpower remains concentrated.
